I have 4 beautiful amazing children. With baby number one I threw up twice IN THE WHOLE PREGNANCY (Lucky Me!) With baby number two I was a lot more nauseous but still only threw up a couple of times. We thought we were having twins because everyone knows constant morning sickness is one of the twin pregnancy symptoms. At first I thought it was just morning sickness but it turned out to be much worse. What hyperemesis means is persistent and severe vomiting. (And yeah, that’s a major understatement. Hyperemesis is hell!)

‘It usually goes by week fourteen after the babies hormones take over from yours but i’ve heard of people having hyperemesis for 9 months’ 😱

Well, week 14 came and went and by that time I had lost over a stone in weight.  I’m a petite 5.3” so didn’t really have a spare stone to loose. I looked and felt awful. If i’m honest, I looked like a drug addict. My face was constantly grey, I had black bags under my eyes because I was so exhausted (vomiting all day and night really takes it out of you) I had no energy to take care of my two little’uns. I was starving all the time and I had constant headaches. I din’t have the energy to do even the simplest of tasks so my house went completely to pot.

But worst of all, I was seriously worried about my baby. Was he getting enough vitamins and minerals? Was he going to be able to survive if I couldn’t even keep water down? Hyperemesis is killing me. Hypermesis is ruining my life. Can hyperemesis cause miscarriage? Can hyperemesis cause death? When will hyperemesis go away? That’s all I could think of. All day, every day, as another meal ended up in the toilet, as my body slowly starved, I would worry constantly ‘will hyperemesis harm my baby?’

(Just so you know a study by Hyperemesis revealed that Hypermesis gravidarum or severe morning sickness doesn’t usually affect your baby. Although they may have a low birth weight if you loose too much weight)

Honestly, I didn’t know what to do. I was at my wits end. Medicine worked, for a little while. But as my pregnancy progressed the tablets stopped working. I was so sick I ended up in A&E with dehydration but the doctors told me there was nothing more they could do. I just had to ‘get on with it'‘. Because apparently, for some women, this was ‘normal’.

But I had never had morning sickness at all in my previous pregnancies. So I knew there must be something wrong.

I was exhausted and I just didn’t know how much my poor body could take.  I remember lying on the couch feeling like I was on a roller-coaster. I was dizzy and exhausted and by that point, pretty damn pissed off too. This wasn’t normal for me. I’m a Mum of 4 but you see but i'm not just your average Mum.

And do you know what Cambridge taught me? That there’s always an answer. If we can make big metal tin cans, full of people, fly fto the other side of the world all day every day with nothing more then a glorified combustion engine strapped to it, then surely we could stop a pregnant women throwing up. It just needed someone to look at it from a new angle.

You see, im the type of women that doesn’t take No for answer. Tell me I can’t do something and I’ll make damn sure I show you I can. And there was no way in hell I was putting up with this shit any more. I’d had enough.

I remember walking round Sainburys almost in tears because out of all that food, there wasn’t a single thing I knew of that was safe for me to eat. So I bought myself a salad. Which I then spent the next two hours violently throwing up. My husband was frantic when he came home from work and found me lying on the toilet floor crying my eyes out, my throat so raw I could barley speak.

When the vomiting finally stopped I crawled back on to the couch with my head spinning and my stomach in knots. I was exhausted. But my God, I was fucking pissed off too. I just kept thinking, surely cave women didn’t feel like this. Our species would have died out millions of years ago if they did. And I know what you’re thinking; yeah those women did die, probably before they even knew they were pregnant. But the truth is they didn’t. Because I realised the doctors in the hospital, the midwives, all the pregnancy experts; they don’t study nutrition at university, they study gynaecology. So of course they didn’t have a cure.

They’d been looking in the wrong place.

This wasn’t a pregnancy problem, it was a digestive problem!

And that’s when I dragged my laptop out and started researching. Because when I studied Holistic Therapies I had to study anatomy and physiology, but more importantly, DIET AND NUTRITION!

And it wasn’t easy. Especially with baby brain. I had Hyperemsis swamping my brain. Hyperemesis can’t drink water. Hyperemesis can’t eat. Hyperemesis can’t get out of bed. Hyperemesis what to eat. The questions were endless. But I wasn’t just google hunting. I read countless medical journals from across the globe. Newspaper articles and peoples personal accounts of this horrible disease and how it affected their life and their pregnancy, just as it was affecting mine. An article on Wiki showed that vomiting in pregnancy has been described as early as 2,000 BC and the first documented case of Hyperemesis Gravidarum was way back in 1852!

But what I found was, it wasn’t common. It doesn’t happen in every pregnancy. And this told me I was on to something. If it was a normal part of pregnancy everyone would have it. But they don’t. So there must be an underlying problem that causes it. Just like it had with me. Obviously something had changed between my last two pregnancies and this one.

And do you know what, once I figured out what the problem was, I was able to CURE myself in LESS THEN 24 HOURS!

In fact, during my research I discovered that a report made in 2014 showed that doctors spend less then 20 hours on nutrition during their 4 years at university. That’s just 5 hours a year! And that’s if you’re lucky. Another study in 2014 showed that only 27% of doctors actually receive any nutritional training meaning the other 73% of doctors don’t study diet and nutrition at all!

In fact, a recent study of Edinburgh University medical students showed that fewer than 10% of them felt adequately trained to give patients advice on their diet and more than 90% said they would like more training on diet and nutrition. Now that’s training to be a GP. Do you think your midwife or consultant studied diet and nutrition as part of their qualifications? Do you think they spend their spare time reading medical journals and current research about the effects of diet on biology? Or do you think they’re too busy learning other important stuff like how to get a baby out in a emergency?
